Cigarette prices drop as duty rates are reduced

Following a reduction in tobacco duties earlier this month, the prices of tobacco products sold in the market have significantly decreased. The government decided to reduce the duty on cigarettes, reversing a decision made less than two years ago to increase it. This change, enacted by President Mohamed Muizzu on July 1st, has resulted in a 50% price reduction for cigarettes compared to their previous selling price. The government stated this move aims to curb the prevalence of counterfeit cigarettes in the black market and aligns with WHO recommendations.
